Valentine’s Day is almost here, and I’m sure, like us, you’ve been looking for an extra special way to show your pup some love this year. So, today we have for you a fantastic recipe that will make your pooch say “woof”: Valentine's Day dog cookies!

Attention all dog lovers! Valentine’s Day is almost here, and I’m sure, like us, you’ve been looking for an extra special way to show your pup some love this year. So, today we have for you a fantastic recipe that will make your pooch say “woof”: Valentine's Day dog cookies! Show your dog some puppy love, put those basic dog bones away, and get started on these diy dog treats. While you’re munching on your candy hearts or ice cream, your doggie can be digging into some tasty homemade dog treats. This recipe has just 5 ingredients, so you won’t need to break the bank at checkout.

Ingredients for Dog Cookies: Peanut Butter, Beets & Probiotic

Ingredients for Dog Cookies: Beets

The first ingredient on our list is what gives these valentine’s day dog treats their red velvet look: beets! So why beets? They give us a beautiful pop of color that is perfect for Valentine’s Day (they will look great as heart dog treats), they help to improve your dog’s immune system and digestion, and they also give your dog a healthy coat and skin. So we’ll be using 1 large beet in our recipe. For our other human-grade ingredients, we’ll be using 1/4 cup of Native pet’s Probiotic Powder (one of our fantastic Native Pet supplements), 2 eggs, 2 cups of whole wheat flour, and 1/2 cup of dog-friendly peanut butter. You see? Not only will this snack be yummy but it will also be a healthy dog treat.

As far as supplies go, you’ll want to grab a medium saucepan, a mixer, large bowl, a rolling pin, and a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. While you’re at it, pick up some cookie cutters: dog biscuits or heart cookies would be perfect for this occasion! Now that all your supplies are ready, it’s time to get cracking on those Valentine’s Day treats!

In order to incorporate the beets into our recipe, we’ll need to boil them first so that they become soft and will blend nicely into our dough. To get started, we’ll fill our pot with about 2 inches of water, and bring it to a boil. While your water is heating up, wash the beets, then trim off all but one inch of the beet greens. By leaving on the stems, we can keep most of the red juice from bleeding out while boiling the beets, letting our cookies retain the bold red color. Place the beets in your pot and boil for 20 to 40 minutes until tender. Smaller beets will take about 20 minutes while larger beets at least 40 minutes. Once tender, remove from the stove and let the beets cool before chopping them up and pureeing them.

Once your beets are ready, you can get started on the cookies! Be sure to preheat the oven to 350 degrees before getting started. Then, in a mixing bowl, combine the pureed beets and eggs, mixing until smooth. This helps to ensure the treats will be bright red! From there, we’ll add in our peanut butter, mix, then add the probiotic powder, and then slowly add in our whole wheat flour. After mixing, we’ll get our dough ready to roll out. Next, we’re going to sprinkle our surface with flour first, and then we’ll roll out the dough until it’s about 1/2 thick. Now pull out those cookie cutters! Once your cookies are cut out, transfer them to a parchment paper-lined cookie tray, and just pop into the oven for 20-25 minutes or until cookies have risen slightly. Once baked, allow the cookies to cool.

Now for the moment we’ve all been waiting for: treat your pup! Maybe you want to make it extra special and grab a gift box for your Valentine dog treats.
